Course of Study: The Bali workshop group will depart on Wednesday, July 2, from Los Angeles LAX airport on Japan Airlines. The workshop will be held from Saturday, July 5 until Saturday, July 20. Daily classes include Balinese, Javanese, and Sundanese (west Java) music, dance, and puppetry, taught by native teachers. Individuals new to these areas are welcome. Regular evening tours to numerous local performances are arranged.
Tuition: The cost for the two-week Bali workshop is $2,595, and includes round trip air fare from LAX and back, airport pickup, three meals a day for two weeks in Bali, tuition for all group classes and ensembles in Bali. Evening transportation to local concerts is shared and quite inexpensive. The CWM workshop is held at a beautiful, spacious estate in central Bali, close to the city of Ubud. The cost for the two-week Bali workshop plus the central Java tour is $2,995 per person, and includes the above plus air fare to Java and back to Bali, hotels and transportation in Java, all breakfasts in Java, and certain meals. The Java tour includes performances and visits to important locales in central Java. The Bali workshop and Java tour is supervised by Dr. Lewis Peterman, Professor of Music, San Diego State University.

Course of Study: The Drumset and Percussion Camp offers an intense hands-on experience for ages 1318 with at least one year of school band and/or private lessons. Each camper performs in most, if not all, of the following: Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Rudimental Ensemble, Steel Drum Ensemble, Afro-Cuban Ensemble, Frame Drum Ensemble, and Dance Accompaniment. Lectures/Clinics/Workshops include Electronic Percussion, Solkattu, Creative Soloing, Rock and Jazz Drumming History, Music Business, Chart Reading, Orchestral Techniques, and more. Concerts include Percussion Faculty, Jazz Faculty, and the US Navy Commodores Big Band, as well as Wes Crawfords interactive Drumset Play-Along DVD and A Rhythmic Murder Mystery shows. Interdisciplinary opportunities exist to interact with the programs of the Institutes simultaneous Jazz Camp, Computer Music Camp, and Dance Camp. On-campus boarding is available and encouraged.

Course of Study: Founded in 1976, Birch Creek is a unique summer music school that provides talented students (typically age 1419) advanced training as well as the opportunity to perform publicly alongside some of the top music professionals around. The overall student-faculty ratio is 2-to-1, ensuring that students receive attentive hands-on mentoring from top music educators and performers. Additionally, students have numerous public performance opportunities before appreciative audiences who have come to expect only the best from Birch Creek. Birch Creek offers two unique learning tracks for percussion and steelpan. Through hands-on experience in performance, small-group instruction, and master classes, the Percussion Track provides an excellent working knowledge of all the instruments and styles essential for todays percussionist. The Steelpan Track is for young musicians (tenor though bass pans) who wish to improve their steelpan performance through technique classes, study of the history and culture of steelpan, composition and arranging for pan, and performance in the Birch Creek Steel Bands and world percussion ensembles. Steelpan students also participate in classes with percussion students in world percussion, drum set, theory, and computers & MIDI. All students perform in the Birch Creek Steel Bands, World Drumming Ensembles from Brazil, Cuba, and Africa, and theater pieces, ala Blue Man Group and Stomp. Percussion Track students also perform in traditional percussion and mallet ensembles.

Course of Study: Indiana Universitys Jacobs School of Music is one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed institutions for the study of music and plays a key role in educating performers, scholars, and music educators who influence music performance and education around the globe. The 2008 summer percussion workshop is an intensive 5-day event for talented percussionists. Applicants in grades 712 are invited to apply for the Pre-College Session. Applicants over 18 years of age are invited to apply for the Adult Session, with both offerings running concurrently. Master classes, clinics, and performances will be presented by internationally renowned performers. Course of Study: This seminar is open to all high school students including the class of 2008. The seminar will offer daily classes and ensemble rehearsal sessions with Leigh Howard Stevens and several top high school percussion directors from the Indianapolis area. The week of instruction also consists of master classes, lectures, concerts, keyboard percussion ensemble, and daily marimba orchestra rehearsal. Topics covered include: improving two-mallet technique, an overview of all major four-mallet grips, an intensive study of Stevens technique, all Stevens stroke types, mechanics of movement, shifting, interval changing, one-handed rolls, basics of tone production, musicianship, core repertoire, memorization, and practice techniques. The seminar will conclude with a final concert that family and friends are invited to attend. Course of Study: (All musical levels welcome!) For age groups 9 through 13 and 14 through 18. Learn to groove on drumset, hand drums, and hand percussion instruments. Featured drummer, composer, author, and educator Ed Roscetti will introduce and demonstrate a variety of traditional and hybrid styles in both classroom and ensemble settings. Styles include rock, funk, hip-hop, blues & world beat grooves. Bass guitar accompanies 2nd and 3rd day ensemble classes leading up to a final performance. Course of Study: The Ghana workshop and tour group will depart on Thursday, July 31, from Los Angeles LAX airport. Arrival in Ghana is on Friday, August 1, with an overnight stay in the capital of Ghana, Accra. On August 2 the group will bus to Ho in southeastern Ghana to begin the workshop there from August 4 through August 17. Classes, housing and meals will be at the E.P. Social Center in Ho. Workshop classes include music, dance, singing, language, and Ghanian-African culture. There will be special fieldtrips, performances and lectures. The Ghana tour follows the workshop from August 1822. The Ghana workshop and tour will be supervised by Kwame Degbor, former Deputy Director of the Center for National Culture in Ho.
