Committee Report and PASIC 2007 Meeting Minutes
Submitted January 15, 2008
by Music Technology Committee Chair Michael Schutz
PAS President Gary Cook appointed Michael Schutz as committee chair in May of 2007 after Allan Molnar successfully completed his three-year term. As chair, Molnar was an advocate for realizing the musical applications of videoconferencing software, and oversaw the publication of a steady stream of Percussive Notes articles. Fortunately for the committee, Molnar will remain active as chair of the music technology outreach subcommittee. Ted Rounds will be taking over for Michael Schutz as chair of the Percussive Notes music technology subcommittee, charged with assisting editor Kurt Gartner with producing quality publications for the music technology column.
In retrospect, 2007 was a productive year for the Music Technology Committee with several well-attended technology sessions at PASIC as well as a host of interesting projects. In particular, it is exciting to see the great work by several committees including ours on a variety of video-archiving projects, capturing performances by a variety of top artists to disseminate to the PAS community. This ongoing project will be a valuable resource for percussionists and band directors interested in educating percussionists for years to come.
The bulk of the Music Technology Committee meeting at PASIC 2007 was devoted to a productive brainstorming session covering a variety of ideas pertaining to future panel discussions, PASIC presentations, encouraging greater involvement of music technology in local “Day of Percussion” events, and other thoughts on how to best serve PAS members regarding issues pertaining to the use of technology. Additionally, the committee hosted three successful PASIC sessions: “Beyond the Metronome” (Jim Bailey and Gary Rudolph), “Performing with Computer Based Electronics” (Fernando Rocha), and “Live Looping Techniques for the Multiple Percussionist/Trapset Drummer” (Rick Walker).
