The
Symphonic Committee serves the percussion and musical community
by promoting, supporting, and endorsing symphonic-related
activities through master classes, labs, clinics, and panel
discussions at PASIC. The Symphonic Committee provides
motivation, encouragement, and symphonic percussion awareness
by means of scholarship, education, and performance.

Symphonic Committee Chair John Tafoya
In
2007, the PAS Symphonic Committee drafted a new mission statement
and revised committee charges to the committee. The committee
also focused on putting the “I”back in PASIC by
encouraging international artists to present orchestral clinics.
We achieved this goal by securing Nick Woud from the Royal Concertgebouw to
make a presentation at PASIC 2007.

Meeting
Minutes:
New
Members
John
Tafoya welcomed the committee's newest members: Keith Aleo,
Ruth Cahn, Stanley Leonard, and Jan Pustjens (who was unable
to attend this year).
Member
Terms
The
committee chair will gather current membership status and new
members will be nominated to the symphonic committee.
Review
The
committee reviewed items from the 2006 meeting - which included
creating a truly international PASIC. The committee will continue
to solicit possible international artists in the future.
Mission
Statement
The
current Symphonic Committee mission statement was reviewed.
Slight changes were suggested and will be edited and forwarded
to Lisa Rogers.
Selection
of Artists
The
committee also inquired as to how symphonic clinic artists
were selected. This process was reviewed for the members. Orchestra
musicians' schedules are sometimes not completely available
by the clinic deadlines; making it difficult for selected artists
to be at PASIC.
Symphonic
Labs
The
lack of participation in the symphonic labs was discussed.
Committee members inquired as to whether lab participants received
free PASIC registration or perhaps those students who received
various PASIC scholarships should participate in a symphonic
lab (or equivalent). E-mail "blasts" to professional
percussionists and teachers, PAS website advertisements, and
the possibility of opening the labs to a wider age group was
mentioned.
The
addition of wind ensemble repertoire in the labs was also discussed.
Committee members suggested a possible additional lab which
would focus on only wind ensemble literature - with a prominent
wind ensemble performer as the artist.
The
committee also suggested that networking to their colleagues
at music schools to recruit students to perform in labs might
help as well as contacting schools in the Austin area for next
year's convention.
Panel
Discussion Topics for 2008 - How to successfully set up an
Audition Video.
Video
auditions (as opposed to taped/CD auditions) are becoming more
prominent in the orchestral audition process. This panel would
include artists who are familiar and successful with this process
along with an electronic/video specialist.
Percussive
Notes
The
committee chair encouraged the symphonic committee to encourage
their colleagues to generate articles for Percussive
Notes magazine.
The
meeting adjourned at 9 a.m. on November 2, 2007.
