Scholarly Research Committee Chair Tom Nevill
The
Scholarly Research Committee began 2007 by adopting a new evaluation
process for PASIC presentations. This new process included
utilizing a rubric to assist in evaluating the proposals that
were submitted. The rubric did provide some assistance in the
evaluation process. The committee received ten applications
to review for possible PASIC 2007 research presentations. Of
the ten applications, two paper presentations, two poster presentations,
and one lecture presentation were chosen.
The
Scholarly Research Committee was also asked early in the year
to be involved in the development of a keyword search database
for the PAS Website. The committee expects to finish their
work in 2008. In the final days of 2007, two submissions for
the PAS Online Research Journal were distributed to committee
members for review.

Adjourn
Meeting
Minutes:
The
annual committee meeting began with the introduction of current
members, new members, and guests that were present. The committee
member contact list was circulated in order to update any information
of new and existing members. Under old business, the committee
was asked if any changes or addendums should be made for the
research proposal application and rubric. It was mentioned
that the 2007 application process for submitting materials
for PASIC did not exactly line up with the new rubric. It was
further discussed that the application process had been revised
to coincide with new rubric and
has been published for the 2008 PASIC research proposal submissions.
The chair also encouraged all committee members to attend and
support the scholarly research committee sponsored sessions
and the poster presentations at this year’s PASIC. Under
new business, Jeff Calissi expressed interest in addressing
the committee about a yearly print version of submitted scholarly
articles for those who require certain materials for tenure
review or dossier purposes. A great deal of discussion followed
about funding this type of project and if this type of publication
would be viable for tenure review purposes. The general consensus
from the committee was that is not cost effective to print
and that a tenure review would not require anything beyond
regular evidence of publication. Similarly, there was some
discussion regarding the online research journal and how it
can be better organized. The chair will contact PAS to address
organizing the publications by author last name, thus providing
some organization to the list. The last item under new business
was a short presentation by Michael Kenyon about the keyword
search database project. Michael spoke about how the process
of entering the data will occur online through primary and
secondary categories. The chair will continue to be the liaison
between Michael and the committee as this project takes shape
in 2008.
