Committee Report and PASIC 2007 Meeting Minutes
Submitted January 15, 2008
by College Pedagogy Committee Chair Alison Shaw
The College Pedagogy Committee (CPC) promotes and enhances the efforts of teachers from community colleges, all sizes of universities, and conservatories. The committee supports the exploration, improvement, and facilitation of the craft of teaching percussion at every college level. Although this is an action-oriented committee, one of our ongoing sources of success is our "think tank” model of committee membership, in which open dialogue is welcomed and encouraged.
The CPC had a very successful panel discussion at PASIC 2007 entitled “The Pedagogy of Great Musicianship.” This panel featured Salvatore Rabbio, Gordon Stout, and Allen Otte. The discussion was provocative and inspiring, and has resulted in an application to host a second panel of the same title next year.
The committee has continued to explore several relevant initiatives by forming subcommittees. These groups will dialogue with each other throughout the year and study/survey and dialogue on the following areas of interest: college juries, minimum equipment and inventory needs, new models for group and individual teaching, integration of more technology into percussion teaching, and mentoring young college percussion teachers.

Suggestion by Ben Miller to consider having a member/representative from the
Collegiate Committee present for discussions regarding CPC panel discussion topics. Patrick Roulet led a brief discussion about uploading videos to You Tube for input and commentary by members of the CPC. This could be used for the interactive jury process or the mentoring initiative. William Moersch suggested that the CPC compile the links for All-State web sites in order to compare levels and repertoire. Glenn Schaft expressed interest in taped interviews and compiling an oral history of significant college pedagogues. Gary Cook indicated that this idea is already in place with the PAS initiative to record archival interviews. It was also suggested that this idea is already in action in the drumset committee. Lisa Rogers used this example to illustrate the ongoing necessity of inter-committee information sharing through the use of the PAS web site.
