Education Committee

Chair: Paul Buyer . E-mail: pbuyer@clemson.edu
The Education Committee conducts research and exploration into practical and philosophical materials to assist both music educators and percussion instructors in the comprehensive education of their students. The committee understands and enjoys the fact that percussion is an attractant to the general public, and therefore provides opportunities for them to learn more through educational outreach activities. The committee recognizes percussion is an important part of public school education, and therefore provides educational experiences for the professional music education community. The committee nourishes the ongoing educational needs of professional percussionists by providing workshops, articles, resources, networking, and stimulating discussions.

Committee Report and PASIC 2007 Meeting Minutes
Submitted January 15, 2008
by Education Committee Chair Paul Buyer
This past year, the Education Committee focused on the work of two subcommittees and our PASIC 2007 Panel Discussion. The FUNdamentals subcommittee, chaired by Pete DeSalvo, organized four FUNdamental clinics at PASIC 2007 in the areas of snare drum (Bret Kuhn), keyboard (Josh Gottry), timpani (Steve Hemphill), and accessories (Fred Bugbee).

The All-State Web-based project subcommittee, chaired by Bob Brudvig, continues to create a database of all-state percussion lists (by state) and video performances. The goal is to have a site where the student/band director can refer to the list of all-state repertoire as well as: (1) watch a video performance of the work by the composer or leading performer, accompanied by an interview pertaining to the work, (2) download a PDF of at least one page of the solo work, and (3) view a list of instruments needed as well as difficulty level of piece.

The committee’s PASIC 2007 panel discussion, “Building a Powerhouse Percussion Program” focused on the resources, support, talent, and skills needed in today’s educational climate to build a powerhouse percussion program at both the high school and college levels. The discussion began with opening remarks from the panel describing the essential skills needed to build a powerhouse percussion program. In addition to leadership, these skills included communication, motivation, retention, teamwork, administration, collaboration, recruiting, and visibility. Issues such as staffing, equipment, and grant writing were also discussed as well as advice for new percussion teachers on starting a new program, rebuilding an old one, and implementing change. Panelists included Mark Ford, John Parks, Rich Holly, John Brennan, and Jim Royle.

Paul Buyer discussed the previous day’s panel discussion, “Building a Powerhouse Percussion Program” with panelists Mark Ford, John Parks, Rich Holly, John Brennan, and Jim Royle. Several committee members offered their opinions and thoughts praising the discussion’s content and chemistry between and diversity of the panelists. Other business included a brief discussion collaborating the committee’s activities more with state MEA chapters and band directors.
