Committee Report and PASIC 2007 Meeting Minutes
Submitted January 15, 2008
by Contest and Audition Procedures Chair Chris Hanning
The Contest and Audition Procedures Committee organized the 2007 Solo Marimba Competition. The preliminary round judges listened to numerous compact disc recordings submitted by contestants to narrow down the field to four finalists. The preliminary round judges included: Anders Astrand, Kevin Bobo, Thomas Burritt, Christopher Deane, Beverley Johnston, William Moersch, and Eric Sammut. The four finalists that competed at PASIC 2007 included: Yi-Chia Chen, Wei-Chen, Mike Truesdell, and Ryan Kilgore. The final round judges were Anders Astrand, Kevin Bobo, Thomas Burritt, Lynn Glassock, Beverley Johnston, William Moersch, and Michael Rosen. The committee is now preparing for the 2008 Solo Jazz Improvisation Competition. The finalists will perform with the Ed Soph Trio at PASIC 2008 in Austin, Texas.

PASIC 2007 Meeting Minutes

Committee Members Present: Lynn Glassock, Chris Hanning, Michael Kingan, Roger Schupp, J.B. Smith, and Jim Snell.
Committee Meeting Agenda: Solo Marimba Competition Post Evaluation; 2008 Solo Jazz Improvisation Competition (trio to perform at PASIC with finalists, potential judges for preliminary and final rounds, advertising to encourage participation);  future categories as outlined by the composition committee; potential MTNA format competition; other business.
Meeting Minutes: All members agreed that the 2007 solo marimba competition was a success. All four finalists were outstanding with the final score out of 500 points falling within 6 points from first to fourth place. The seven-judge format (instead of our past practice of using five judges) worked out very well. All agreed that we should continue using 7 judges when the category is solo marimba. All committee members agreed that we should try to secure funds for the Ed Soph Trio to play with the jazz solo improvisation finalists. All agreed that having such a prestigious group would help with promoting the competition and attract a greater number of entrants. Chris Hanning agreed to submit a committee grant application to PAS. Members of the committee chose specific schools to contact directly to help encourage members to participate in the 2008 competition. The 2009 composition category is multiple percussion. The committee agreed that we should work with that category. Discussion for the remainder of the meeting focused on a possible MTNA style competition. Members of the committee expressed interest in running this competition through our committee. All agreed that a format that promoted versatile performing (keyboard, multiple percussion, timpani) would be desirable. No additional business was discussed. the Composition Committee to review future competition categories.
