The Collegiate Committee provides collegiate percussionists with opportunities to lead and network, as well as facilitates the development of more informed and well-rounded students.

Committee Report and PASIC 2007 Meeting Minutes
Submitted January 15, 2008
by Collegiate Committee Chair Lynn Francis
The Collegiate Committee was formed to provide collegiate percussionists with opportunities to lead and network, as well as to facilitate the development of more informed and well-rounded students. Student members are involved in planning and presenting PASIC sessions, producing Percussive Notes articles, and participating in annual committee meetings.

During 2007, the Collegiate Committee hosted a panel discussion at PASIC 2007 entitled So I Graduated with a Music Degree. Now What?, which featured panelists Cort McClaren, Staci Stokes, Nathan Daughtrey, and Ruth Cahn. The committee also led a successful recruiting campaign over the past year. The recruitment subcommittee advertised through state chapter networks. Many new members attended the committees annual meeting at PASIC 2007.

Additionally at the PASIC 2007 annual meeting, the Collegiate Committee elected the following regional representatives: Midwest-Jesse Willis, Southwest-Josh Armstrong, Northeast-Maria Finkelmeier, and Southeast-Kyle Forsoth. Several new subcommittee chairs were also elected. Travis Knapp will be chairing the recruitment subcommittee, Kyle Forsoth will be chairing the article writing subcommittee, and Maria Finkelmeier will be chairing the PASIC session subcommittee.

The committee also developed proposed PASIC session topics for the next two years. The proposed session topic for 2008 and 2009 is “Making the Most Out of the Summer Months,” and will discuss the details of participation in these programs. The 2008 session will deal specifically with keyboard and orchestral programs, while the 2009 session will deal with drumset, world percussion, and drum corps programs.

Meeting Minutes:

Call to Order – 8:00AM
Welcome and Introduction
- Welcome was given by Collegiate Committee Chair Lynn Francis.
- Collegiate Committee members and attendees were introduced.
Representatives
- Representatives were voted upon for the vacant Southeast and Northeast positions, as well as a representative to take Francis’ place at the PAS Board Meeting.
Annual Report
- The Annual Report from the last meeting was reviewed.
Future Concepts
- The handout list of future concepts and ideas was reviewed. Francis encouraged members to submit additional ideas via email.
College Pedagogy Committee Report
- Thad Anderson, liaison to the College Pedagogy Committee, gave a report of the committee’s meeting, at which the following was discussed: subcommittees for jury preparation, technology, equipment-related topics (standards, care and maintenance, etc.), a mentoring program for first-year college teachers and DMA students.
Recruitment
- Maria Finkeymeyer reported that this year’s meeting has a much higher attendance and that she will continue sending emails to PAS chapter presidents to encourage membership. A measure to create an overall two-tier membership (active and non-active) was put down in favor of tracking membership of the Collegiate Committee members only.
Panel Discussion
- Ryan Lewis summarized the materials gathered for the 2008 panel discussion on summer festivals and activities. Discussion was held on the scope of the session and candidates for panelists, and it was determined that there will be 3 professionals and two students on the panel and that 2008 will be Part I: Orchestral and Keyboard Summer Festivals/Activities and 2009 will be Part II: Marching, World, and Drum Set Summer Festivals/Activities. It was decided that at each a handout compiling information on all of the available summer activities for that session will be made available. Panelists will be asked to contribute their personal experiences, tips on receiving funding, and how their experiences have impacted their careers (without marketing that festival/activity over others).
Volunteers
- Volunteers were taken and then given responsibilities for the 2008 session, the Percussive Notes preview article, and for recruitment.
New Business
- The topic of having 50 representatives (one from each state) and international representatives that would also serve on the PAS state chapters’ boards was discussed, but put down in favor of continuing with a smaller committee.
- The topic of recruiting using the state PAS chapters was discussed, including instating a student representative, and the idea of presenting each chapter with a packet of information on the procedures and benefits of instating a student representative was approved.
Communication
- Francis asked for ideas of ways to communicate better with members and post information in a manner other than Facebook. It was decided to make better use of the PAS website’s “Member Forum,” and that future emails will be sent with a link to the site.
Meeting Adjourned – 9:15AM
